The Results

This article specifically talks about finding your voice when using AI for content creation. All images are Generative.

I swore I would follow up on my last blog post about Chat GPT and here’s the deal. I’m so obsessed with AI right now that it’s all I can think about, so this follow-up post was easy. Everyone is immersed in AI right now. That is a fact. If you are in business, school, etc. you are 100% using AI for something. Grammarly, Bing!, Zoom, Chat GPT, Adobe, Google whatever it is AI is sliding right into the mix. It’s a suggestion here, a slight rewrite there, and of course, you had to be living under a rock not to see the U2 concert in Vegas at the AI venue of all venues, Sphere. You know what, in most cases, the robot is a pretty nice little companion in my work day. It helps immensely to speed up the monotony of the daily mundane necessary to complete work these days.

I for one am enjoying it, but I’ve also seen enough Sci-Fi in my life to identify with the existential threat that AI experts are warning of. That’s another opinion for another day. For now, I’m all for letting the legislators and policymakers sort that out. What I do cringe about right now is something I hope to educate my own customers on. The misuse of Chat GPT in your marketing. At the end of the day, AI can be very helpful, but we’re encouraging you to think of it as more of a brainstorming tool than anything else.

Chat GPT in the hands of the customer is easy to spot

First of all, ‘Hands of the customer’, to us, means that you aren’t learning to become a prompt engineer anytime soon. You’re likely using Chat GPT Free and you’re likely using it in the same manner you would a search engine like Google.

Below are a few of the dead giveaways in the articles that I have been receiving:

The content always has a title that reads Introduction and Conclusion.

There is almost always a colon in the headline of the article

There will be a list and it will probably have emojis

The introduction and conclusion are almost identical

The content is redundant, especially in the middle where readers tend to lose interest in articles

The content is mildly incorrect and can contain everything from grammatical errors to factual inaccuracies and relevance issues.

Secondly, I still struggle with whether or not being able to identify that something is AI generated is bad. I’ve seen more customers take an interest in their own content for once in my life. Is that a bad thing? A lot of people struggle with the mechanism of writing, but they might have the imagination and ideas. AI can help immensely for those less educated, equipped, or inclined to bring their ideas to life.

Should creative, news, and anything that AI touches be labeled?

I don’t see the harm in that – yet. I don’t think that just because content has come from a machine it’s automatically fake or disinformation and doesn’t add value. AI is going to reshape a lot of industries, especially when it comes to education. The way we learn has been fundamentally changed and in ten years it will be a moonscape compared to what we’re used to. Forget new grading systems – that’s not worth complaining about.

For example, my daughter was discussing a friend who is in the Engineering department at her University. He had a paper to write. He used Chat GPT to formulate the topic for his paper and generate the base of content for it. After he got it to where he wanted it, he moved it over to the AI Assistant in Grammarly. Grammarly made some further suggestions and edits. Essentially, it allowed him to polish Chat GPT’s grammar and imbue more of the tone he wanted. The whole process took less than an hour. His weekend was free. Did he learn anything? I can’t say, and maybe that’s where the issues will stem because there are some jobs that robots can’t do – yet.

Teaching AI my voice – not as easy as I hoped

A big thing that younger students and those with less experience in the computer science department are missing is the ability to create meaningful prompts. Rather, they do as I stated above, and use Chat GPT the same way as a search engine to produce a pretty generic response. Write me an article about mortgage rates, why are high-interest rates bad, etc, etc. I was really interested in trying to teach the AI how to learn my voice. I found an article on Forbes that laid out a five-step process and the results were not quite what I wanted, to be honest. For the purpose of this article though, they’re nothing short of amazing to show the difference between human writing and AI writing even with some elevated prompts, training, and a background in “the industry”.

Take a look below.

AI for content creation – The first prompt is the deepest

I started with my last article as a jumping-off point. My goal was to use AI for content creation to generate a follow-up article that sounded like I genuinely wrote it. I began by using the Ghostwriter prompt and essentially told Chat GPT to analyze my writing style and tone. Below is the prompt I used and the subsequent AI response.

You are an expert ghostwriter, world-class at capturing your client’s authorial voice. You are also an expert in natural language processing. Below is a blog post written by your client.

How Chat GPT interpreted my voice

Your client’s authorial voice in this blog post can be described as informal, conversational, and introspective. They start by addressing the prevalence of AI and OpenAI, expressing a certain weariness about the constant discussions surrounding the topic. They use colloquial language and rhetorical questions to engage the reader and convey a sense of relatability.

Your client’s voice reflects skepticism initially, with a touch of resistance to the idea of AI and Chat GPT replacing human creativity. They narrate personal experiences and conversations, including heated debates with family members, which adds a personal and relatable touch to the writing.

As the blog post progresses, your client’s voice becomes more contemplative and self-reflective. They discuss their observations and concerns about AI, both in terms of its impact on education and content creation. There’s a sense of curiosity and openness to exploring AI’s potential benefits, even though it comes with a hint of guilt and uncertainty.

Overall, your client’s voice is characterized by a balance of skepticism, curiosity, and a genuine desire to understand and navigate the evolving landscape of AI and Chat GPT. It combines personal anecdotes, introspection, and informal language to connect with the reader and convey their evolving perspective on the subject. An LLM can emulate this voice by using a similar tone, rhetorical questions, personal anecdotes, and a conversational style to address the topic of AI and Chat GPT.

I found the analysis of my writing voice to be bang-on accurate. So much so, that I had high hopes for the next prompt using AI for content creation.

The second prompt – designed for a better you.

You are still an expert ghostwriter. You already have a natural language processing analysis describing the client’s authorial voice. The client has indicated that they also like Tina Fey’s voice and character, so please mix in 15% of Tina Fey’s writing style. Can you please write a blog, to update readers of the last post about how the client has used Ai and Chat GPT since the last posting? The blog post should contain the following facts: the client does not use AI for reports, emails, or any personal communications with other clients. The client is using it more frequently to formulate articles and routine work, however, they find it very redundant and that it needs a lot of editing and polish to make the writing appear more natural. The client has identified key nuances and is able to easily spot the use of AI in everything from news articles, headlines, social media posts, and other clients sending in blog articles for posting. The client has also started using generative AI for images and is in love with this process. The client sees the benefit of originality and uniqueness when looking at generative AI for artistic purposes. The client states that they don’t feel guilty about this because it requires imagination to generate the ideas – they’re just able to materialize much faster. The client’s daughter has been using generative AI starting with her final project last year. This year in university she is considerably further immersed in Open AI, Machine learning etc.

This is the article Chat GPT returned back to me.

Embracing the AI Wave: An Update on My Journey with Chat GPT

Hey there, dear readers! It’s been a while since I last shared my thoughts on the ever-evolving world of AI and Chat GPT. Today, I’m excited to give you a peek into what’s been happening since my last post. Plus, I’m adding a sprinkle of Tina Fey’s witty charm to keep things entertaining.

First things first, let’s talk about how I’ve been using AI lately. Drumroll, please… I still refuse to let AI infiltrate my reports, emails, or any personal communications with my clients. Call me old-school, but some things are sacred, and I believe the human touch is irreplaceable in these areas.

Now, onto the juicy stuff. I’ve been experimenting more with AI, especially when it comes to crafting articles and handling routine tasks. But, here’s the kicker: I find it as redundant as rehearsing lines for a comedy sketch. Sure, it helps with the heavy lifting, but boy, does it need some serious editing and polishing to make it sound remotely human.

Speaking of edits, my AI radar has been on high alert lately. I’ve become Sherlock Holmes when it comes to spotting AI-generated content. Whether it’s news articles, catchy headlines, or even social media posts, I can almost smell the algorithms at work. It’s like having a superpower, but it also makes me appreciate authentic, human-generated content even more.

Now, let’s dive into a thrilling new chapter of my AI journey – generative AI for images. I have to admit; I’ve fallen head over heels for this creative powerhouse. It’s like having a magical art assistant, and Tina Fey would probably agree that having a sidekick like this is the ultimate dream.

You see, I’ve discovered the beauty of originality and uniqueness in the world of generative AI for artistic purposes. And here’s the twist – I don’t feel an ounce of guilt about it. Why, you ask? Because it takes imagination to fuel these AI engines. We’re not just replicating; we’re conjuring ideas at warp speed. So, I’m all for it. After all, Tina Fey herself would appreciate the efficiency of turning ideas into reality faster than you can say “Liz Lemon.”

Now, for a quick family update. My daughter, who’s been riding the AI wave with me, has dived even deeper into the world of Open AI, Machine Learning, and all that techy jazz. She started with generative AI for her final project last year, and now she’s swimming in it like a pro. It’s incredible to see how quickly the younger generation adapts to these innovations. I guess she takes after her old mom, huh?

In conclusion, my AI journey continues to be a rollercoaster of discovery and intrigue. While I remain a steadfast guardian of human communication, I can’t help but embrace the AI tools that make my professional life more efficient. Tina Fey’s sharp wit reminds me that humor and creativity can coexist with technology. So, here’s to the future, my dear readers, where AI and human imagination collide in a harmonious dance. Stay tuned for more updates because this journey is far from over!

AI for content creation – It didn’t pass

I found that even using a sophisticated, detailed prompt couldn’t keep Chat GPT from initially revealing itself. In fact, the very first thing on my list of key ways to determine if it’s machine-generated content or authentic content was the title. And there it was. A colon. Next, was the 15% Tina Fey direction. It couldn’t use her voice and style, instead, it used references to her throughout the entire article to tell readers, hey this is just like Tina Fey. This was just one area that made the content cringe-worthy.

However, there were still three more prompts to get through in order to train this follow-up piece to emulate my voice.

More on that in my next follow-up to the follow-up – Part 3 is coming.

Are you sick of hearing about it yet? Chat GPT, Open AI, AI – whatever you want to call it, it’s almost as prevalent as inflation is in the news today. The truth is, there’s so much discussion around AI that it’s becoming a desensitized topic. From whether to ban it in classrooms, to robots taking over as the new real estate brokers, there’s a lot of speculation on what industry is being taken over next.

Will Chat GPT, ruin our brains and steal our jobs? Maybe. The other hard truth is that this is an incredibly powerful and unrealized (by many) jump in technology. We’re on the cusp of something. What that thing is, it’s still too early to tell. But, here’s what I’ve learned so far about Chat GPT in particular and how I have used and continue to use it in my daily work routine.

Routine is the operative word. Chat GPT takes the mundane out of routine work.

Writing content for one specific genre day in and day out, for years on end takes a toll. It heavily taxes your creativity, and it can be a struggle to come up with new ways to sell the same flavour of pies every day. And that’s insight coming from someone who has been steadily writing content and selling pies since they can remember. Similar to a manufacturing job where you’re putting nuts on bolts day in and day out, writing about one specific topic for clients each month loses its brain-stimulating luster over time.

Enter Chat GPT.

At first, I was not only skeptical of Chat GPT and what it promised, but I was also a harsh, outspoken critic of it. I hated the idea of Chat GPT. I didn’t agree with commentary, that it could create content better than a human could. So, I immediately judged it as redundant, dumb, non-factual, biased, and a fad. Without ever even giving it a try. After all, why would you try it if you knew you didn’t need it?

I acutely remember the first time we had a conversation about Chat GPT. We were in the kitchen making dinner. The conversation turned into a full-blown argument, with me raising my voice that there was no way a stupid robot would replace the need for human brain work, especially, my human brain work.

Spreadsheets

The conversation was between me, my husband, a 25-year experienced programmer, and my daughter, a second-year university, media studies and computer science student at the time. She was writing a paper on Chat GPT, and we were chiming in as parents who also had a vested interest in the topic because our livelihoods were said to be somewhat at stake.

The debate was heated more than our dinner that night. Me taking the stance above, my husband sharing calm facts about Open AI and what he has been waiting for, and my daughter, who had all the recent data and facts to back up his points. My husband was a little too giddy and matter of fact, which made me even more ‘passionate’ about my feelings on the matter. He pragmatically stated that AI should be looked at as an efficiency tool. We didn’t villanize the spreadsheet when it was released in 1979 on the Apple II?

The spreadsheet didn’t spark a flurry of activism among accountants as far as I’m aware. In fact, it took away the mundane functions and calculations and improved the efficiency of an entire industry.

The debate eventually turned into dinner being ready. But it was never the end of the conversation. There were many more conversations, and papers to be discussed as the year wore on.

Chat GPT and Grade 9 Social Studies.

As much as I hoped it would die with the next news cycle, talk of Open AI and machine learning only got more fervent. My daughter was writing even more about it in university, and my son, a student in grade 9, was seeing his classmates start to use it for classwork. That’s when I really started to take note. Because if anyone wants to spot the next big trend, then you know it starts in middle school. Middle school kids or Tweens are almost always responsible for defining what’s next for culture. I had no choice now but to stare Chat GPT in the face and see what was really going on.

My son’s Grade 9 Social Studies teacher explained to the class at the start of the year that there would be no leniency on plagiarism in her class. Anyone caught copying content verbatim from Google or anywhere else would receive a big fat 0 on their work. Nothing new or revolutionary about that point being made in an educational setting. Perhaps what makes it noteworthy is that she also added a caveat that using AI or Chat GPT as the students were familiar with would also result in the same zero grade.

Time for a rude awakening.

She meant business, and she claimed that she had a way to check. It turns out that her brother was at the forefront of developing Open AI and is a professor at a leading Canadian university. When it came time for final grades she assigned 0’s across the board to every student but ten or so. She also attached a note with a time slot to meet with parents so she could explain the change in grades. Many students saw their 90’s turn to 0’s, and parents wanted to know why.

My son already knew my position on AI would land him in hot water if it ever came to light that he wasn’t exercising his brain without the aid of the Internet, so he was safe from a nil grade. My feeling is that most parents wouldn’t know what Chat GPT was, to begin with, let alone that their kids were using it to pass Socials 9. I’m sure they got a crash course on it before summer break began.

So, when did I start using?

It sounds like a dirty thing. When did you first use Chat GPT? What was it for? Maybe, for some of us, it still is. I’ve been watching documentaries on addiction lately.

From Opioids to Xanax, the common thread among prescription drug abusers and recreational addicts is that there’s a level of shame associated with using something that takes away pain. You’re less, when you’re using drugs to __________fill in the blank. The same is now being argued about using AI. Especially when you’re using AI to create. If you didn’t type the words in a specific order from your brain, are you really the creator?

The first time I used Chat GPT was playing around with my daughter on her laptop. We asked it basic questions, and then she showed me how she used it to research a paper on itself, essentially. I didn’t think much of it, just that it seemed a lot like an improved search engine.

Look at you, all efficient and stuff.

Then I noticed that my daughter had the Chat GPT tab open more often than not when she was working this summer. I knew that she was writing more because she was helping to take over some of my workload, so I started reading some of the articles she had recently posted. My daughter is an accomplished writer well beyond her years. She’s been producing content almost daily since the 11th grade and has multiple honours in English to support her.

The articles I read were polished. They had a fine point on them. There was no room to improve or expand they were just – done, for lack of a better word. That’s when I knew she was using Chat GPT to help churn out the endless content that had fallen in her lap. Was she editing the articles? Yes, she was definitely overseeing the content that was generated by the machine. She was responsible for the topic, and for guiding the AI to create a base for what she needed. From there, she optimized the content for marketing purposes and ultimately crafted the content that she would post.

Is using Chat GPT cheating when using AI for content creation?

If you consider that it’s taken me an afternoon to write this article then you can begin to see where the lure of Chat GPT comes into play. It’s a time saver. First and foremost this is the most significant benefit that I can take away from using AI to create content. I know how to write, and I don’t struggle with concepts, or coming up with questions that need answering. I find research on most topics interesting and I don’t need to lay out a framework for writing articles. Words come easy to me and developing an introduction, body, and conclusion are second nature.

Like any working parent, I have a busy schedule, as such, I try to maximize my efficiency so that I can have a spare moment. We’re also business owners and the name of the game in business is to bill as much as you can in the shortest amount of time for quality work. You see where I’m going with this, right?

Help me sound friendly?

I first used Chat GPT to answer a question about a lease agreement in July this year. In August, I used Chat GPT four times. Mostly to edit my tone in a few emails I was sending, because I have the tendency to come across as argumentative when I know I’m right. I wanted to see if AI could make me less bitchy and more persuasive and friendly. To my surprise, it did, and the results were well received on the recipient’s end. I took this as a win and this may indeed have been my turning point with Chat GPT.

This month, my daughter started her third year of university. As a result, my workload of content creation got dumped back in my lap. Last week, I used Chat GPT seven times. All queries were work-related and helped me produce content for customers. I used my own prompts and bullet points and in every case, the first draft returned in the results was pretty close to perfect.

I lack time in my job – in my life. Writing an article from scratch takes more time than one imagines. Editing, formatting, proofreading, rearranging, and re-reading until you’re so sick of what you’ve written you just want to start over. This is the daily plight and Chat GPT takes away that pain point. It gives you time because it gives you results in seconds. When fed the correct information, it is a major asset, especially in the area of content creation.

Feelings of guilt don’t outweigh the clarity of efficiency.

I spent the weekend thinking a lot about Chat GPT and how I felt about using it. Was I happy with the results? 100%. The articles were succinct, easy to read, and allowed me spare time to engage with my customers on more important topics. Was I feeling guilty that the words didn’t flow directly from my brain? 100%. I felt like I was shortchanging myself and that ultimately I was writing my own pink slip.

That feeling still hasn’t left. However, when I take a step back I can see with more clarity. What I see is that writing and producing content is only a small part of what I do for a customer each month. For one, there’s my experience in the industry and the content has to start from something, an idea, a concept, or a current event. Then it needs to be edited, optimized, and posted. And finally, it needs to be shared across the right mediums.

Life is an experiment, especially when you’ve spent your life working in tech.

I’m planning to continue my use of AI to assist in content creation. It saves me an immense amount of time and quite frankly the content is no better or worse than what I would write on my own. I’m getting more excited at the prospect of what I can do with more time to spend on my customer’s accounts. Imagine if you could get rid of the most mundane part of your job and offload it to a partner who produces consistent results for you in a fraction of the time. That’s Chat GPT.

Too much opioid use can cause your brain to rely on the artificial endorphins that are created. Once your brain does this, it can even stop producing its own endorphins. That’s my worry about my Chat GPT experience. Will I regret it in the future? Will I become addicted to allowing AI to manage my time more efficiently? Time will tell and I’ll be sure to keep you updated.

AI is taking the world by storm. It seems as though every application and service provider is finding a way to incorporate AI into their business model. Whether this be through content writing, chatbots, automated logo creation—the list goes on. Although AI tools can certainly be fun to experiment with and help with many different tasks, they have their limitations. And, if you’ve been thinking about employing one of these bots to do your SEO for you, we’d encourage you to think again. Using AI for your content marketing could result in some serious consequences for your business. In this article, our Kelowna website design team will be going over all of the reasons why using AI for your SEO simply doesn’t work. Follow along below to learn more!

What is AI Content Writing?

AI content writing has recently become a hot topic of discussion. This is all thanks to the free chatbot called ChatGPT, which is able to answer a range of different questions/prompts. For instance, ChatGPT can solve coding problems, write essays, explain complex topics, complete resumes, and much more. Because of its vast capabilities, many businesses that have long relied on SEO for their marketing have been thinking about ditching their marketing companies and hiring ChatGPT instead. But, what exactly is AI content writing? And, aren’t there other AI tools that help with SEO?

Put simply, AI content writing is merely the process of using an artificial intelligence (AI) writing tool to create online content. This could be copy for your blog, captions for your social media, emails, or anything else. Contrary to popular belief, AI content writing isn’t a new topic. It’s only been made a topic of discussion because of the free nature of ChatGPT. Before ChatGPT was released, there were several other AI writing tools on the market. However, they all required a paid subscription. But, AI writing tools aren’t just limited to the ones that can generate copy. There are numerous other kinds of AI writing tools that you’ve probably been using for years.

Types of AI Tools for Content Marketing

When it comes to marketing, there are three main types of AI tools that businesses and marketing teams may use. The first is, writing assistants. These tools do things like spell check or complete your sentence by suggesting the next word. Writing assistants are built-into software like Google Docs, Microsoft Word and Gmail. As well as, on devices like your smartphone, laptop, or tablet. And, if you are a user of Grammarly or other proofreading software then you’ve also used an AI writing assistant.

Another common category of AI tools used for marketing (specifically SEO) are SEO support tools. For example, SEMRush, CoSchedule, Yoast, Copy.AI, or chatbots that answer customer questions when a real person isn’t available to help.

And, lastly, we have content writing tools. These tools are those like ChatGPT which are able to write entire articles for you.

Why Does it Fail?

It’s undeniable that AI has come a long way from where it once was. However, in any creative field, it is hard to automate things that require a human touch. Unfortunately, we are not at the point where AI can be left to its own devices and relied upon to create meaningful content for our marketing.

In many cases, AI content is very repetitive and robotic. If you’re trying to convert people into customers this kind of content isn’t going to cut it. Furthermore, while the content may be grammatically correct, it could be littered with misinformation/biases. Since AI tools are only trained on a limited set of data provided by their creators, more often than not, this software will spit out incorrect information.

An example of this can be seen in the fact that ChatGPT doesn’t know anything beyond 2021. And it has been known to have political, racial, and gendered biases due to the information its been trained on.

Why You Still Need a Kelowna Website Design Team:

If you’re still not convinced that you need a Kelowna website design team, here’s a list of reasons to keep them around.

You need a skilled professional to research relevant keywords and hashtags

AI tools cannot write content without someone giving them a prompt

Writing needs to be revised to ensure that it fits with your company’s brand

Content should also be proofread to ensure that it is readable for your intended audience

A skilled professional must review content for accuracy and biases

The content should be looked over and rearranged for maximal user experience and the best SEO results

Good SEO content needs external and internal links, as well as, images which need to be input correctly by a human

Failing to revise AI copy and make changes can result in your content being flagged as spam for violating Google’s guidelines. Typically this results in your articles being deindexed, which means they no long appear in search results (this has a very negative impact on your website and digital presence)
